Many, many people have created much more eloquent essays and discussions around the decline of spelling and grammar in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, so I'm not about to try and top them. But what I will add is that I really struggle with how it reflects the general intellectual sloppiness of our culture.
I don't know that I could point to any definitive studies that show a connection between writing their instead of there and plagiarising/fabricating work and passing it off as your own, but it nags at me that they are connected.
The worst part of this decline is the justification of it as a simple change in language and the way it is used, if it is noticed at all.
