Spring Break. I am looking forward to spring break.
Not because I have big plans (staying at home cleaning various dark, dangerous parts of my house) or because the weather is promising (today is drizzle when they promised sunshine and I don't think anything will change).
Nope, I am looking forward to spring break for no other reason than it is a change.
Sometimes when you are the parents of small kids a change is as good as a holiday (and sometimes a holiday is simply life lived in a change of venue!). And that change is something that can refresh you as much as a week at a tropical resort (who am I kidding?).
So my next two weeks will be spent getting up, starting the day slowly with pyjamas, nature videos (any BBC brand will do) and cereal. Followed by outdoor activity for the kids, emptying out the garage and basement (so I can put it all back again) and taking the gang of three terrible tots out for strolls. Plus the occasional visit to Heritage Park, the Zoo and maybe an ice rink.
Not restful, but a change.
I'm taking the same attitude toward my Oilers this spring. A change is as good as a fix. There really is nothing that will happen between now and the end of the season. Management heads are secure (except for Prendergast who, if rumours are correct, will be out of a job this summer), trades can't happen until seasons end and the draft is a long ways away. I can't speculate any more accurately than anyone else who writes about the Oil, so don't ask my opinion (ok, its Seguin for me and don't trade for the number 2 pick). So what to do?
I'm taken a break because they're broken and I will save my worries about the future for June. Because the draft, UFA day and the trade deadline look to be the only bright points of light in the next 12 months for my team.
